Deploying the SpywareBlaster NV Client using Group Policy

Deploying the SpywareBlaster NV Client using Microsoft's Group Policy can be accomplished via two different methods:
  1. Assigning the software using the client .MSI installer
Highly recommended: Ensures that the software is automatically installed and configured for computers/users.

  2. Publishing the software using a .ZAP file
Legacy method: Makes the software available for install via Add/Remove programs, but requires users to do so manually.

Deploying using the .MSI installer

Assigning the client .MSI installer package with Group Policy is now the recommended method of deployment. This method automates the installation, configuration, and setup of the Client module on all supported versions of Windows.

The following instructions will help guide you through deployment of the Client module using Group Policy and the MSI installer.

  • Creating the Files/Environment
    1. Locate the folder in which you installed the SpywareBlaster NV Administrator Console. (On the Administrator machine.)
      (By default this is C:\Program Files\SpywareBlaster NV\)

    2. Browse to the "client" subdirectory.
      (By default this is C:\Program Files\SpywareBlaster NV\client\)

    3. You will need to share out this "client" folder.
Make sure your Users have at least Read access to the share.

Note:
If you do not want to share the MSI from its default location, you will need to move the following files/folders to the new location and share that folder out:

C:\Program Files\SpywareBlaster NV\client\sbnvclient.msi
C:\Program Files\SpywareBlaster NV\client\SpywareBlaster NV\*.*

All necessary files will only be present once you have completed Client Configuration in the Administrator Console.

  • Group Policy Setup

Now that you have configured the share to be visible to domain users on your network, you can assign the MSI package through Group Policy.

    Notes:
The instructions below describe the necessary steps to create a new Group Policy and to deploy the SpywareBlaster NV Client. If you have an existing group policy, you should also be able to add these settings to it.

Make sure that the computers to which you want to deploy the SpywareBlaster NV client are in the organizational unit (OU) that has the Group Policy Object with these settings.

    1. Open/Create the Group Policy Object that will be used for Publishing the SpywareBlaster NV install.

    2. Navigate to Computer Configuration --> Software Settings --> Software Installation.

    3. Right Click on Software Installation and select New --> Package
An Open File Screen will be displayed.

    4. In the Filename area put in the UNC network path to where you shared the client files in the last section. (i.e. \\Server-Name\ShareName)

Note: Do not select the local path on the server where the .MSI File resides. The path must be a valid UNC path to the network share that can be accessed from other machines.

Example: If the .MSI file is located on the server on which you are configuring the Group Policy, and resides in a shared folder of C:\Apps, you should put the UNC share name \\ServerName\Apps as the folder, not C:\Apps.

    5. After you pull up the network share, find the sbnvclient.msi and double click it.

    6. Your screen should now resemble the following image:

    7. Make sure to update your Group Policy polices to make these changes go into effect.

On Windows 2003 Servers the command to do this is:
      gpupdate /force

Any users that are affected by that Group Policy will need to restart their PC’s to get the SBNV Client Installed.

Since this is an Assigned Application it will be automatically installed and a scheduled task will be created for the SBNV client to check for updates when a user logs on.

Deploying using a .ZAP file
If you wish to deploy the SpywareBlaster NV Client using Group Policy and a .ZAP file, a document is available that details the process:

Please Note: This information is retained only for legacy purposes. Unless you must use the .ZAP file method, it recommended that you instead use the MSI installer method detailed above.
